The Together We Are Better is a non profit organization (TWRB) and parent committee which was inspired by our amazing boys.
Transitioning to adulthood is an important milestone that often presents challenges for youth and adults with additional needs.
As is the case for many government-funded services, once a child with additional needs reaches a certain age, the support available to them changes. In Ontario, children transition into the adult service program on their 18th birthday.
Teens and adults with additional needs are often overlooked and neglected once they reach high school. There is a lack of programs, services and therapies for this forgotten population. Programs and services are either too expensive, nonexistent or have long waitlists.
For families and caregivers fortunate to receive some funding (sadly very minimal) soon come to realize that the older the individual is, the less funding they will receive. Most families and caregivers are unable to do more whereas others struggle with years of debt in order to support their teen or adult with additional needs. In addition, some families are forced to have members stay home to be the primary caregiver due to this lack of support.
